The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1
Hollywood needs to stop turning successful trilogies into quadrilogies just to make some extra moola. It’s destroying films. Don’t worry, I know what you’re thinking. I’m not the right demographic for this film. You’re right. But I was surprised that I actually enjoyed the first film in this franchise, enough that I picked up the book and read it. The second film I was cynical about going into to it, but came out thoroughly entertained, and ready for more. It was a much stronger and entertaining film than the first, and that’s no easy thing to do.
So now we come to the first part of the third film in the trilogy. Expectations were high. The Hunger Games had delivered twice before, so there was no reason to think it wouldn’t deliver again. But the problem with splitting a story in two, is that you don’t always have a lot to say in the first half.
And that is exactly what we have with Mockingjay – Part 1. As Rage Against The Machine would say, it’s pure motherfucking filler. It’s a set up for an action packed final film, but it’s also a slap in the face to the fans, and film goers in general.
It’s a film that should never have been made. And it’s made me care less about the final film.
Rating: M Violence.
