Skype Social Media Hacked
The 1st of January certainly kept Skype busy. During the initial hours of the day the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA) managed to compromise the social media and blogging accounts for Skype. This included twitter and the Skype Blog.
Posted on the skype blog was an article about how Microsoft emails and accounts are being monitored and the data is being sold on to governments.
The twitter account also echoed the same sentiment.
Skype quickly responded on Twitter after cleaning up the messages, and presumably plugging the holes in their systems.
You may have noticed our social media properties were targeted today. No user info was compromised. We’re sorry for the inconvenience.

While there has been little other response from Microsoft some security consultants have been speculating about just how SEA were able to access these accounts. Everything has been suggested from poorly patched blogging tools to common passwords shared between blogging and social media accounts. One thing that is clear is the increased tempo of operations from SEA, a group sympathetic to the current Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, has seen a number of high profile incidents.
